Key Verse: Seek God First

This is a wonderful verse to memorise, which we so often forget when we get worried about all kinds of things. It is in the middle of a whole passage on worry, and when Jesus tells us not to worry He says to do this instead:

‘Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you.’
Matthew 6:33

To summarise in really easy terms: focus on the things of God and God will take care of the rest.
But it does bring up the question – what is the kingdom of God, and what is His righteousness that we are supposed to seek?
The kingdom of God
The kingdom of God is His rule and reign, so it is really talking about heaven.
We should desire heavenly things, press towards heaven, make it our goal and set our mind on things above not on things of the earth.
We should also desire that more souls be saved and enter into heaven, so we should seek to win souls to Christ.
His righteousness
Even though our position in Christ means that He has made us stand righteous before God, practically we still have a long way to go.
So we need to seek the righteousness of God, to obey His commands and to be more like Christ every day.

I like what Matthew Henry says about this verse: ‘We must mind heaven as our end and holiness as our way’.
Let’s walk on the path of holiness with heaven as our goal!
