Building Others Up in Holiness

I was reading something that John Wesley spoke of to his fellow preachers:

‘Bring as many sinners as you possible can to repentance, and with all your power build them up in that holiness without which no man can see the Lord.’

‘Go into every house and teach everyone therein, young and old, if they belong to us, to be Christians inwardly and outwardly. Make every particular  plain to their understanding, fix it in their memory, write it upon their hearts.’

I think it is easy to forget the ‘Great Commission’, to go into all the world, preach the gospel to every nation and make disciples, teaching them everything Christ has taught us.

Of course some people are called to do it more than others, if they are gifted in evangelism, or called to the mission field or fulltime ministry. But I believe we should all be taking it on board in our daily life.

The Bible says to ‘Exhort one another daily’, so even if we aren’t out on the streets witnessing we can encourage, strengthen and exhort our fellow Christians.

You might feel like you don’t know enough, but someone who is 5 days old as a Christian will know things that someone just converted won’t. And even those who are young in the faith can still help those who are older when they are going through things.

This challenged me to remember to focus on eternal things – souls, and holiness of myself and others. It’s amazing how much someone can be affected when you exhort and teach them in what is right.
