Hold On to What You Know – When Life Doesn’t Go as You Expect #3

I’m a bit slow in posting at the moment because we are still settling in at our new house, so there is lots to do!

I wanted to carry on the series I started on what we can do when life doesn’t turn out as we expect it to.

Last time I wrote about trusting that God has a plan, and I want to go on to how we need to hold on to what we know.

When life doesn’t go how we thought it would, and things go wrong, it is natural to wonder if God has left us. We think we won’t be able to handle this. We think He’s forgotten us.

Chuck Smith, the founder of the Calvary Chapel movement, says when you are going through trials,

“Don’t give up what you know for what you don’t know.’

It’s always struck me as a bit odd that in the book of Job, some of Job’s most famous words seem totally out of sink with his surrounding thoughts. He is talking about all the bad things that have happened, and then suddenly out of nowhere come these amazing words:

For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God Job 19:25,26

I think that after he had lost his family, possessions and health, this is how he kept going – he held on to what he knew about God.

We may not know why this is happening to us, but there are things that we do know. Here are some that we can keep reminding ourselves of – I have put in the Bible verses because I think it helps us to understand the weight of it when we see it written in God’s word:

God’s love for you is everlasting

The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.  Jer 31:3

God will never leave you

For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Heb 13:5,6

God will never forget you

 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me. Isaiah 49:15,16

God cares for you

 “Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. Luke 12:6,7

Nothing can separate you from God’s love

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom 8:38,39

God will never give you more than you can handle

1Co 10:13  No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

If you doubt that some of these things are true, remember what God has done for you and others in the past. And remember God is faithful  – He will keep to what he has promised.

If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself. 2Ti 2:13

As one of my favourite hymns says:

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with thee;
thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
as thou hast been thou forever will be.
Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided;
great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
