10 Songs About Heaven

Some of my favourite worship songs are about heaven or Jesus coming back, and many of the hymns I love have a last verse about heaven.

I love them so much because when I am going through hard times they give me hope by reminding me that one day it won’t be like that. No more pain. No more sin. No more temptation. No more weeping. No more tiredness… that’s a big one for a mother of small children!

Here are some of them:

1. You Hold Me Now – I love the picture of God comforting us, and no more tears or pain.

2. There Is A Day – this is jammed with scripture in such a beautiful way. When we see Him we will be like Him!

3. Soon And Very Soon – ‘I will be with the One I love’ reminds me of the person that really matters.

4. Homesick – this is a sad song, but also very comforting. It is written from the viewpoint of someone who has lost a loved one, but reminds us that heaven is really our home.

5. I Can Only Imagine – wondering what it will be like when we are finally with Jesus

6. For I Know My Redeemer Lives – I love this song. I love it because it reminds me of the story of Job and how through everything he had lost he could still say these words. And I just love the confident faith that one day I will stand with my Redeemer. My 5 year old son prayed recently, ‘Lord, I pray that Jesus would come soon. I don’t know why He’s taking so long’!

7. The Sands Of Time Are Sinking – I know this is old! But when I was a child it was my favourite hymn. When I started playing piano my dad promised me £5 if I could learn to play a hymn and then play it to him from memory. This is the one I picked 🙂

To finish the collection, here are some beautiful last verses to old hymns:

8. Love Divine All Loves Excelling

Finish, then, Thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee;
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

9. Amazing Grace

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

10. When Peace Like A River

But, Lord, ‘tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh trump of the angel! Oh voice of the Lord!
Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul!

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

Even just reading these words fills me with excitement, anticipation and joy! I would love to hear if you have any more songs that you like about heaven or Jesus coming back.

    Hi Rhoda,
    I also like “You’re beautiful” Pil Wickham, amd “I can only imagine.”

    They say Patmos was hot and arid, and it informed John’s vision of heaven, there the sun shall not smite them by day or the moon by night, and the Lamb itself shall lead them to springs of living water.
    Lovely!

    Thanks for sharing that song by Phil Wickham – I like some of his other songs but had never heard that one till today.

    I didn’t know that about Patmos either. I think I’ve always skipped over the sun not smiting them bit since we don’t have too much of that here!!
